In computing, both hardware platforms or software systems will be described in terms of the time when the system is available to customers as a percentage of the total time.  Many <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Service Level&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A service level defines the standard of performance required from a service provider and allows measurement and reporting against the agreed standard.  Service levels may address responsiveness, timeliness, reliability, and\/or uptime.  For example, the engineer shall attend to the machine within four hours of receiving a call-out, and shall fix the machine so that it is operational within four hours of arrival on site. (NB this refers to total time, not uninterrupted time.)  The opposite of uptime is <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Downtime&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Downtime refers to that period when a system is unavailable.  Typically applied to servers, websites or equipment, downtime may occur for scheduled maintenance or as a result of unplanned outages.  Service level agreements often specify the minimum uptime that a system should provide and reliability is a key driver of increased uptime. See also <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Contract, Performance Based&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Performance based contracts seek to focus upon the output required from the contractor, and create measures and remuneration mechanisms which align the contractor&#x2019;s performance with the outcomes desired. This contrasts with traditional approaches in that the specifications focus less on the &#x2018;how&#x2019; and more on the &#x2018;what&#x2019; through a clear statement of expected work outcomes. The statement of work shows the detailed work elements including a performance standard, acceptable quality levels, how performance will be measured and monitored, and the percentage of the contract price each service represents. Performance based contracts require clear definition of what is needed and measurement processes which relate directly to actual performance levels. For example, supposing a buyer pays a maintenance provider for supporting a pump. The fees are 15% of the initial acquisition cost, and the fee is paid annually. The fee structure is unrelated to the actual cost expended by the supplier, and the supplier may or may not focus on achieving the required uptime levels - assuming that these are specified and measured. A performance-based contract might reward the provider for uptime, the provider will only be paid if the pump is functional, and the provider will be paid less - or not at all - if the pump reliability is less than specified. This would be a performance-based contract, and align the contractor to delivering the required pump availability. Typical contents of an SLA include the parties, the key contacts, the intent of the agreement, the services, priorities, service standards, metrics and review mechanisms, responsibilities, guarantees, and warranties. The SLA may specify availability, uptime, serviceability, performance, operation, or other attributes of the service, so that the parties are clear about what is to be delivered. In this sense the SLA may be an informal document that is not intended to be legally binding - especially if it stipulates the obligations of the client - or a schedule to a legally binding contract. What separates SLAs from contract schedules is the focus on defining and measuring service levels. Maximum, target and minimum service levels may be defined, together with mechanisms that apply if service levels are not met, such as joint problem solving, escalation, arbitration, and termination.
